🇬🇧 Research themes#

My research activities are conducted within the Models and Knowledge team of the L3i laboratory (Computer Science, Image, Interaction) at La Rochelle University, and focus on the field of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) and lattice theory. FCA provides a mathematical framework from which numerous data analysis methods have been developed. It is based on the structure of the concept lattice, where each concept groups together a set of objects (the extension or cluster) and the attributes they share (the intension or pattern). The set of concepts naturally forms a hierarchical graph, known as the concept lattice, providing semantic clustering and an interactive framework for representing and exploring data. My research has always combined a fundamental perspective, with theoretical contributions where properties and algorithms are established through formal proofs, and an applied perspective, with proposals for new methods validated through experimental studies. This dual approach allows for a mutual enrichment between the fundamental and applied aspects.

Current research directions

My current scientific activity focuses on the development of the GALACTIC platform, designed to generate semantic concepts from complex and heterogeneous data. From a theoretical perspective, this work addresses the extension of FCA to non-binary data and introduces algebraic description spaces and convex geometries, which provide the theoretical foundations of this platform. From an application perspective, we have proposed extensions for sequence analysis incorporating a temporal dimension, with promising results for the study of trajectories, logs, and time series generated by sensors. More recently, my research has focused on community detection in graphs, with algorithmic approaches inspired by FCA.

Major past contributions

After completing a PhD in Algorithmic at Université Paris 7 in 1997, focusing on the fundamental and structural aspects of lattices, I gradually broadened my research towards both theoretical and applied problems in FCA. My theoretical research has led to major contributions to the study of canonical direct bases and closure operators. In parallel, my applied research has focused on extending FCA to non-binary data, with applications to image analysis and ontologies.
